ABOUT THE BOOK

The Case of Doctor Sachs weaves together scene after scene of people's lives in a small town as they wait to see their doctor, then share with him their reasonable complaints, beliefs and life-stories. The doctor is a man whose pity for his fellow creatures is his own untreatable condition, until a live story emerges between the good doctor and one of his patients. And Doctor Sachs himself is writing a book, one not unlike The Case of Doctor Sachs, a critique of the medical profession and a celebration of the power of literature to save lives that medicine cannot.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Marc Zaffran, alias Martin Winckler, was born in Algeria in 1955. His family moved to Israel and then, in 1962, to France. He obtained an M.D. in 1982 and in 1983 opened his own office as a general practitioner. His first novel, La Vacation, was published in 1989. A movie version of The Case of Doctor Sachs, directed by Michel Deville, won first prize at the Chicago Film Festival and may be released in the U.S. In addition to his novels, Winckler has published numerous essays on social, medical, and cultural issues. He has also translated into French works by Richard Powers, Patrick Macnee, David Markson and Nicholson Baker. Along with his writing Winckler continues to practice medicine part-time. He lives in Le Mans, France with his wife and children.
