ABOUT
THE BOOK
|
| Gle, the protagonist, stands for change in an age steeped in tradition. In spite of being the chief priest and thereby the custodian and defender of age-old customs, Gle volunteers to fight for the whiteman during the Second World War. Disillusionment comes when he and other demobilised veterans march on the Castle, the seat of the colonial government, to hold the white governor to the promises made by the British colonial power. Disappointed and frustrated, he ponders whether it was worthwhile abandoning his traditions for foreign values. |
