ABOUT THE BOOK
Paul Bannerman, an ecologist in Africa, believes he's in control of the trajectory of his life. But when he's diagnosed with thyroid cancer he's prescribed treatment that makes him radioactive and for a period a danger to others. Taken in by his parents to protect his wife and child from radiation, threats of projects to build a nuclear reactor and drain the country's vital wetlands preoccupy Paul and the strange state of his existence leads his mother to face her own past.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nadine Gordimer is a South African writer whose most recent novel, The Pickup, published in 2001, was longlisted for the Booker Prize and won the best book category for the 2002 Commonwealth Writers' Prize in the Africa region.
She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991 and was the joint winner of the Booker Prize for The Conservationist in 1974. Nadine Gordimer has been awarded honorary doctorates from Oxford and Cambridge, is the vice-president of International PEN and a spokesperson for the United Nations Development Project to eradicate poverty.
A co-founder of the Congress of South African Writers, Nadine Gordimer is a strong advocate of literature and free speech. She has also made a number of television documentaries and written a large collection of articles, literary criticism and speeches. She travels extensively in Africa, Europe, and North and South America. Nadine Gordimer lives in Johannesburg.
Her most recently published collection of short stories is Loot and she is also the editor of Telling Tales, an anthology published to benefit AIDS charities in Southern Africa. Her latest novel is Get A Life, published in November 2005. It is available in paperback from October 2006.
Get A Life has been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.
