ABOUT THE BOOK

Borneo, 1937: Geoffrey Portas arrives to work in the oilfields of Sarawak, a place where exotica substitutes tedium and cerulean seas replace grey English winters. Gripped by location and circumstances, life in this sultry sanctuary of colonial languor exceeds all expectations.

Then, life is torn asunder as Japanese bombs rain down across the Pacific. Asian attitudes change as the avaricious, compassionless minority sense the loosening of their colonial shackles. Conscripted into Britain’s Special Operations Executive, Portas sets about fighting a merciless enemy.

Set in the heart of Borneo’s magnificent millennial rainforest, a rolling adventure unfolds form Churchill’s War Cabinet Rooms to Japan’s Imperial Palace as brutality rains down on a guileless people whose hopes for freedom come to focus on a man who fights to save them, his oilfields and the woman he loves.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Paul Leslie Smith is a British expatriate engineer who has spent the last seventeen years working in Malaysia, the first four of which were in Miri, Sarawak’s oil Town.

An avid reader, Paul has long harboured an interest in Southeast Asian history, from the era of the Spice Islands and formation of the Straits Settlement through to the present day.

His interest in Miri’s World War II history piqued by locals, it was the hours spent in delightful dusty second-hand bookshops, as he travelled the globe on business, that provided several out-of –print works. Revealing hitherto forgotten aspects of the Japanese Occupation of Sarawak, these findings were the inspiration behind Rainforest Tears: A Borneo Story.

LIBRARIANS' COMMENTS

Rainforest Tears is a blockbuster of a historical novel, a thoroughly researched fiction of Sarawak opposition against the Japanese invasion in 1942.
