rules & conditions of the award 2002

information for libraries

Library Involvement
  • The International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award is open to works of fiction written in, or translated into, English and published within a specified period of time.
  • The nomination process for the Award is unique as nominations are made by selected libraries in capital and major cities throughout the world.
  • Participating libraries can nominate up to three books each year for the Award: the books must meet the criteria for eligibility which are distributed to libraries each year.

Participating libraries receive a range of promotional materials including the Award newsletter Fiction Matters and three colour posters featuring the nominated books, the shortlist, and the winning title. Each poster includes a list of all those libraries taking part.

This information is also featured on the Award web site.

Over 100 libraries participate in the Award: libraries in Countries or major Cities which are not already represented in the Award are warmly invited to contact the Award Office.

Staff at Minneapolis Public Library
Minneapolis Public Library regularly use the Award posters and books in their fiction promotions. (Pictured are staff members Joyce Cobb, Mike McCabe, Katie Weiblen, Sandra Burgeson, and Mary Moore.)

In recognition of the role of libraries in the Award, each year a participating library is selected at random and given the opportunity to send a representative to the Award Dinner in Dublin, courtesy of IMPAC. In 1999 Ms Marsha Spyros of The New York Public Library attended, and she is pictured here (left) with Dublin City librarian Deirdre Ellis-King. In previous years librarians from Belgium and Germany have attended.
